Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
The fourth year of Harry's education at Hogwarts is approaching. He is staying at the Weasley family's house. At night, he has a frightening dream: an old, abandoned house where the Dark Lord and his followers reside. Voldemort gives some instructions to his allies—Peter Pettigrew ("Wormtail") and an unknown young man. Then he kills the suddenly appeared old gardener, Frank Bryce, a Muggle caretaker of the estate.
Harry and Ron are awakened by Hermione, who has just arrived. At dawn, along with the twins Fred and George, Ginny, and their father Arthur Weasley, they set off on their way. Soon, they encounter Amos Diggory and his son Cedric, a senior Hogwarts student from Hufflepuff. Climbing a hill, they all use an old boot-portkey to transgress to the site of the Quidditch World Cup final.
At night, after the match ends, the Death Eaters—Voldemort's supporters—attack the camp. With Arthur's help, Harry, Ron, and Hermione flee. During this, an unknown man casts the Dark Mark. The three friends are caught at the scene by Ministry of Magic officials, and Mr. Weasley defends them again.
The school year begins. Albus Dumbledore announces that Hogwarts will host a grand event—the Triwizard Tournament, a traditional competition among magical schools. Representatives from France's Beauxbatons Academy and Durmstrang Institute from the far North are invited to the tournament. Only students aged 17 or older can participate, and the participants themselves are chosen by the Goblet of Fire, one from each school. At the same time, Alastor Moody, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, arrives at Hogwarts. However, many students disapprove of his methods and find him intimidating.
As a result of the selection, the participants of the tournament are: Viktor Krum from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts. But suddenly, the Goblet spits out a fourth note—with Harry Potter's name. Everyone is shocked, and the professors cannot understand how fourteen-year-old Potter's name ended up in the cup. The chief judge of the tournament, Bartemius Crouch, frightened and confused, nonetheless confirms Harry as a participant. Many students begin to mock "cheater" Potter. Even Ron is seriously upset with his friend for not sharing his plans.
One day, Hagrid takes Harry into the forest and tells him about the first task, in which there will be a fight with a dragon. It turns out that Fleur and Krum will also know about the task, as their mentors, Madame Maxime and Igor Karkaroff, also visited the forest. After this, Harry decides to warn Cedric, who is the only one left unaware of the dragons.
In another confrontation with Malfoy, Harry is defended by Moody, turning Draco into a ferret. Minerva McGonagall scolds Moody, after which he takes Harry to his office and gives him advice on how to use a broomstick during the task.
Just before the first task, the participants are revealed their challenge—to steal a dragon-guarded egg, which contains a clue for the next task. Harry faces the most terrifying opponent—the Hungarian Horntail. The boy defeats it and takes the egg (which makes horrible sounds when opened). After this, Harry regains the respect of his classmates, and most importantly, he makes up with Ron.
Christmas is approaching. The Yule Ball is to be held at Hogwarts, with the tournament participants opening the event. Harry attempts to invite Cho Chang from Ravenclaw to be his partner, but it turns out she has already been invited by Cedric. Ron tries to invite Hermione, but she is also taken—her partner is Viktor Krum. At the ball, Ron causes a scene of jealousy and ruins Hermione's mood.
Before the second task, Cedric returns the favor to Harry and advises him to take a bath in the prefects' bathroom, bringing the egg with him. Following the clue from Moaning Myrtle, Harry opens the egg underwater (and the egg produces a song—a clue for the next task).
The day of the second task arrives. The task is for each participant to spend an hour underwater and rescue something precious to them. Harry doesn't know how to complete the task, but unexpectedly, Neville gives him gillyweed. After consuming it, Harry transforms into a half-human, half-amphibian creature: he grows gills, webbing between his fingers, and fins. Avoiding grindylows and other underwater creatures, Harry moves toward his goal. He sees Ron, Hermione, Cho, and Fleur’s sister, Gabrielle Delacour. Soon, other champions arrive—Cedric saves Cho, and Krum rescues Hermione. At the last moment, Harry pulls out Ron and Gabrielle (Fleur couldn't reach the prisoners due to a run-in with grindylows). Cedric is declared the winner, and Harry is awarded second place for his nobility.
After the second task, Harry hears noise in the forest and discovers the body of Bartemius Crouch. At Hogwarts, he notices the strange behavior of Karkaroff and Snape. The Durmstrang headmaster mentions some sign to Professor Snape. When the Durmstrang headmaster leaves, Snape expresses suspicion that Harry is stealing ingredients for a polyjuice potion.
Later, in Dumbledore’s office, Harry plunges into the Pensieve. The Pensieve takes him back 10 years to the Ministry of Magic, where, under Crouch’s direction, a hearing was held for Igor Karkaroff (who was a Death Eater at the time). Brought from Azkaban, Karkaroff revealed the names of several former followers of Voldemort, including the son of the murdered Bartemius Crouch.
The third task begins. Participants must navigate a maze and, by retrieving the Triwizard Cup, become the winner of the tournament. In front of Harry, Krum attacks Fleur but does not harm Harry himself. A scuffle between Viktor and Cedric breaks out, during which Cedric disables Krum. The two Hogwarts students race toward the cup, but Cedric is stopped when creeping roots entangle his legs.
Harry once again demonstrates his nobility and saves Cedric. The rivals decide to become winners together by grabbing the cup simultaneously, as it represents the victory of all of Hogwarts. However, the cup turns out to be a portkey, and they are transported to a cemetery that Harry had previously dreamed of...
Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) appears and, on Voldemort's orders, kills Cedric. He then ties Harry directly to the gravestone of Voldemort's father, Tom Riddle Sr., and performs a magical ritual. As a result, the Dark Lord is reborn, and several other Death Eaters arrive, including Lucius Malfoy, whom Voldemort chastises for not coming to his aid sooner.
Voldemort challenges Harry to a duel, and their spells—"Expelliarmus" and "Avada Kedavra"—collide, creating a chain connecting their wands, from which the spirits of those Voldemort's wand killed last (including Harry's parents) emerge. They advise Harry to break the chain, and Cedric asks him to take his body with him. Harry does so, and the portkey eventually returns him to Hogwarts.
Harry is declared the winner, but the death of Cedric shocks everyone. Harry himself is in a state of shock and horror. He reports Voldemort's return. The Minister of Magic, however, tries to cover up the incident. Taking advantage of the confusion, Alastor Moody (or so it seems) takes Harry to his office, where he tells him everything in detail.
Here, the professor admits to Harry that it was he who put Harry's name in the Goblet. He is the one who advised Hagrid to take Harry into the forest and who gave Cedric the clue, as well as Neville the gillyweed. It was he who cursed Krum. It turns out that the person acting as Mad-Eye Moody all this time was actually a Death Eater. When he tries to kill Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, and McGonagall burst into the office. Under the influence of the truth serum, the false Moody reveals the location of the real Alastor—locked in a magical chest.
The person everyone thought was Moody turns out to be Barty Crouch Jr. He was the one who stole ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion from Snape, which he continually consumed. Crouch shows the Dark Mark (the same one Karkaroff showed Snape). This clearly manifested mark means that Voldemort has returned and is ready to act...
A period of mourning is declared at Hogwarts, and Dumbledore informs everyone that Voldemort is responsible for Cedric Diggory's death. The school year is over, and the students of Hogwarts (along with their guests from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang) leave the castle.
